DFRWS EU 2020 has been postponed from being held in Oxford in March 2020. DFRWS EU 2021 will be held in Oxford from 29th March – April 1st, 2021.

For this year’s event, we will have a Virtual Conference that will run 3rd – 5th June and will contain all of the elements you expect from the DFRWS event. The program as planned for 2020 will be hosted Virtually during the afternoons (UK time) of June 3rd-5th, 2020 so that this research can be published in a timely fashion and be disseminated to the community.

We have been able to build a virtual experience that will replicate all of the components of the DFRWS EU event, including the formal programme but also the social events! DFRWS Virtual Europe 2020 will include; Keynotes, Papers and Presentations, Hands-on Workshops, Poster and Demo Sessions, the Forensics Rodeo, Pub Quiz Social event, Interactive Birds of a Feather Sessions and Lightning Talks.

Any attendee that would like to apply their current registration to next year’s event in Oxford will receive a full Virtual Pass to participate in this 2020 online event. For attendees who would only like to attend the 2020 Virtual Event we can apply a refund for the difference in the registration fee.

Risk, Quality Assurance and Innovation in Digital Forensics

Gill Tully, PhD, MCSFS, HonFFFLM | Forensic Science Regulator

Gillian has worked in forensic science for nearly 30 years, specialising in forensic genetics, innovation, validation and enhancement of quality standards. Her work has included provision of expert evidence to courts in the UK and overseas, and collaborative working with forensic practitioners around the world. In November 2014, Gill took up the appointment of Forensic Science Regulator and is responsible for setting quality standards for forensic science in the Criminal Justice System.

Gill is a visiting Professor at Northumbria University, an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine and an Honorary Member of the Society of Legal Scholars. She has published widely in the fields of forensic genetics, quality standards and expert evidence.



Keynote Abstract:

The massive demand for extraction and analysis of data from digital devices has led, in England and Wales, to evolution of a cottage industry of small units, each using a selection of software tools, extracting data and passing it, often largely uninterpreted, to investigators.

Some of these digital forensic units have in place the quality assurance measures needed to ensure that the limitations of their work are known and that the provenance, continuity and validity of the data they have extracted can be demonstrated; others do not. Increasingly, front-line police officers are carrying out data extraction using self-service “kiosk” technology.

Those analysing the data are often, in this jurisdiction, intelligence analysts or investigators, with access to few advanced tools. A lack of methodological robustness in the analysis and interpretation of evidence has, in some cases, resulted in failures to find exculpatory evidence, which was present within the extracted data. In this presentation, risks and failures in the extraction, analysis and interpretation of digital evidence will be considered alongside the need for process and technology innovation, with a view to achieving sustainable improvement.

RESEARCH PAPERS undergo double-blinded peer review, and the proceedings are published by Elsevier as a special issue of the Journal of Digital Investigation.

PRESENTATIONS, POSTERS, and DEMOS require a brief proposal, not a paper. These proposals undergo a light review process to select presentations of maximal interest to DFRWS attendees, and to filter out sales pitches. Presentation proposals must specify their target length from the following options: 20 minutes, 120 minutes (2 hours), 240 minutes (4 hours), or full day. Note, longer presentations and hands-on tutorials are referred to as ‘workshops’ described below.

WORKSHOPS / TUTORIALS can be several hours or full day, and typically include hands-on participation by attendees, allowing for an in-depth, detailed exploration of tools and techniques of interest to DFRWS attendees. Workshops can cover state-of-the-art research projects, useful tips and techniques for standard tools, or most anything that DFRWS attendees would consider beneficial. While commercial tools can be used, these workshops or tutorials should NOT be thinly-veiled commercial advertisements.

PANEL PROPOSALS: These should be one to three pages and clearly describe the topic, its relevance, and a list of potential panelists and their biographies. Panels will be evaluated based on the topic relevance and diversity of the panelists.

DFRWS will provide one free conference registration for each accepted workshop / tutorial.

Student Scholarship and Award Program

DFRWS continues its outreach to students studying digital forensics. DFRWS and its sponsors will award one or more Student Travel Scholarships each year to students who present their accepted research papers. One scholarship will be awarded to the Best Student Research Paper awardee. More travel scholarships may be awarded, depending on sponsorship funding each year. Exact award amounts will vary, but are estimated to be between $1,000-$1,500 per award. Students must register (and pay the registration fee) for the conference and cover all travel expenses. The travel scholarships will be dispersed at the conference to reimburse student travel costs. DFRWS will notify the recipient of the Best Student Research Paper award on or before the conference registration deadline. Other awards (e.g. industry sponsored awards for research in specific topic areas) may be awarded after the registration deadline and are fully contingent on scholarship sponsorship by industry each year.
