Hi! We at DFIR Review wanted to take a moment to share some of the great things all the volunteers at DFIR Review have been doing over the last year and all the great peer-reviewed posts available at dfir.pubpub.org.
For those who are unfamiliar, DFIR Review is a project under DFRWS that conducts peer review of content and blogs, regardless of if they have already been posted. The goal of this project is to provide verification, validation, and review of digital forensics content that is rapidly shared by practitioners. This allows for the review process to take place while the content is still available to the community.
In 2021, DFIR Review published 6 pieces including the following:
- Validation of X-Ways Forensics Evidence File Containers by Larry Jones
- USB Forensics – Recover more Volume Serial Numbers (VSNs) with the WIndows 20 Partition/Diagnostic Event by Alexandros Vasilaras, Evangelos Dragonas, and Dimitrios Katsoulis
- Missing SQLite Records Analysis by Shafik Punja and Ian Whiffin
- Upgrade From NULL – Detecting iOS Wipe Artifacts by Heather Mahalik and Ian Whiffin
- Extracting and Decrypting iOS Keychain: Physical, Logical and Cloud Options Explored by Vladimir Katalov
- Using Photos.sqlite to Show the Relationships Between Photos and the Application they were Created with? by Scott Koenig
Also in 2021, two DFIR Review Peer-Reviewed articles were nominated for 2021 Forensic 4:Cast awards including Are you sure you extract all the available Volume Serial Numbers (VSNs) that reside in the Windows 10 Event Log “Microsoft-Windows-Partition%4Diagnostic.evtx”? By Alexandros Vasilaras, Evangelos Dragonas, and Dimitrios Katsoulis and the winning Article of the Year How to use iOS Bluetooth connections to solve crimes by Heather Mahalik and Matt Goeckel
The magic behind this cadre of publications is the DFIR Review Community and reviewers. We have a community of over 35 reviewers who have completed 135 reviews. This year 10 of our reviewers earned the title of Silver Reviewer with at least 5 reviewers, and 2 or our reviewers became Gold Reviewers with 10 or more reviews. Our community is truly global with contributions from 16 countries across 4 continents!
Thank you to everyone who has contributed be it as an author, reviewer, or organizing committee. We hope to be able to share even more throughout 2022. Have content you want to submit to DFIR Review? Check out our submission guidance. If you are interested in being a reviewer, please feel free to email us at dfirreview@dfrws.org
